How can I extend the range of my Wifi in my house/garden/shed?

If the wifi hub that's provided by your internet service provider doesn't give a good quality signal in parts of your house, or your garden there are a number of different options to consider

• Buy a wifi extender
  A wifi extender will fit into a spare plug socket, that needs to be in-range of your existing wifi network

It works by creating it's own wifi network, which then transmits data back and forth with your existing wifi router. The advantage being the antennae which will usually offer much superior coverage compared to your existing wifi hub. The speed of your internet connection can be slightly degraded, but if you're working from a laptop and not intending on doing a lot of downloading you will most likely not notice much difference.

Those closer you can be to to the wifi extender, the better signal you will get - and it's worth noting that even the extender will have a finite range.

Installation is simple, buy and plug into a spare socket, you'll then have to enter the details of your existing wifi network - usually found on the bottom of your router. If you're stuck feel free to ask a question!

• Buy a power-line adapter

A power-line adapter will transmit internet data over the power cables within your house.

You need to connect one plug with a cable to your router, and position the other plug near to the device you'd like to connect.

The advantage of one of these adapters is that it doesn't have to be within good range of the existing wifi hub, and allows travel of data through potentially thick walls in your home.

• Network Cable

If you're looking for a very stable extension to your internet you may want to consider the most simple solution of all - a very long network cable. Plug one end of the cable into the back of your internet router - and another into the destination.

Flattened network cables (as below) allow travel under external doors, without having to drill.
